Proof of citizenship is required when crossing the international Windsor-Detroit border. Accepted proof (original documentation, no photocopies) includes either:

a birth certificate or certificate of citizenship or naturalization (original or certified copy), as well as a government- issued photo ID such as driver's licence, OR
-
a valid passport, OR
-
a NEXUS or a Free and Secure Trade (FAST) card, OR
-
an enhanced driver's licence, OR
-
a Certificate of Indian Status (CIS), OR
-
for those 18 years and under, a birth certificate
If you are a permanent resident of the U.S., you should bring your Permanent Resident Card (i.e. green card) with you.
Effective June 1, 2009: Canadian citizens will be required to present one of the following U.S. WHTI-compliant (Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative) documents when traveling to, through or from the United States by land:
