From fishing villages and farming communities, to a metropolitan area hailed as one of Canada's leading technology and manufacturing centers, the Windsor-Essex region has it all!
Originating in the mid-eighteenth century as a small French settlement along the Detroit River, Windsor has continuously grown and developed and today, boasts a population of 216,473. When you include the surrounding communities in Essex County- Chatham Kent, the population jumps to almost 520,000 people.
Located on the border with the United States, the region of Windsor Essex County is strategically situated in the heart of North America's business and industrial markets. Less than one mile across the Detroit River separates Windsor and the 10th largest market in the U.S., Metropolitan Detroit with its 4.5 million people. All of this contributes to making the Windsor-Detroit crossing the busiest commercial land border crossing in North America, accounting for over 28% of all trade between Canada and U.S.
The region is located at the extreme southwestern tip of Ontario and Canada and is in fact a peninsula, surrounded by the waters of the Great Lakes. As a result of this fortunate geographic position, the region benefits from mild winters with very little snowfall, and long warm summers. This temperate climate provides one of the longest growing seasons in Canada, extending from April to October.
